After a couple of years away from training I caught the martial arts bug again and went off to a Kickboxing class with a friend. This coincided with my last year of university. Training was hard. Our instructor was an absolute machine and I had never come across anyone that could kick as hard as he did. I learnt a lot from him about boxing and how to use my hands as well as sparring. My kicks also were modified away from the Taekwon-Do style to the harder Kickboxing style. I enjoyed my time with him but due to asthma struggled to make the transition into the ring. At one stage between finishing university and starting work I was training like a madman! My regime consisted of three nights a week of boxercise, which was a 1 hour session of skipping, Kickboxing drills, bag work and weights, directly followed by Kickboxing class, swimming three times a week and running. I was extremely fit. For someone my height of 6 foot 3 I weighed only 76 Kilograms. But believe it or not it was the first time I actually developed some muscle. After being out of work after university for 6 months I got a job and it was too difficult to juggle training and work. The Kickboxing was given away.
After a couple of years a friend of mine convinced me to return to martial arts and this time we tried Zen Do Kai at the local gym. I enjoyed the syllabus very much as it covered the traditional martial arts with Kickboxing and a little grappling thrown in as well. This stint lasted a year, but I found I was still being drawn back to my original ITF Taekwon-Do style, but unfortunately I couldn't find any clubs close to home. After a year with Zen Do Kai, work pressure and buying a house got in the way and again I stopped training.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
